mplayer -ao alsa:device=plughw=0 -af format=u8 KDE_Startup.wav

...is silent

mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=0 -af format=u8 KDE_Startup.wav

...I can hear it. (What's difference between hw and plughw?)
