I can't establish an UMTS connection with my UMTS-card and recent kernels.

It's a IBM ThinkPad R51, so rather ancient hardware. When I try to establish a 
connection via UMTS/GPRS and the Qualcomm card I get a kernel trace and pppd 
dies. The exact kernel version is 2.6.31.6.
