PROBLEM: Radeon display connector : No monitor connected or invalid EDID

Since installing kernel-3.1.1 the screen goes blank during the boot and I am 
unable to do anything, not even ssh into the box.
​
linux-3.1.0 worked ok. There are no other changes to the system. Both were 
built using the same config file.
​
When I reboot into 3.1.0 and check the log messages, I see
