I just tried 3.2 and the head of the kernel tree and they both worked fine on my system, which is an old Intel server. I have a Supermicro system with IPMI, but it will take me a bit to get a working kernel there. Could you try with the module param "kcs_debug=7"? That will give me some idea what the state machine is doing. At this point, if I can't reproduce, I can't do much.
