Ok, I've commented on that thread now.

of_machine_is_compatible() is a quite sensible existing generic
interface to do this. We don't need to add a driver for it.

For this you might want a chipid driver, yes. I'm mostly objecting to
the addition of the new is_soc_.*() API, not the introduction of the
driver for that purpose.
