I tested on an imx6dl riotboard
(https://elixir.bootlin.com/linux/latest/source/arch/arm/boot/dts/imx6dl-riotboard.dts
+ patches to enable CAN1) with an external PHY.

I disabled CONFIG_PM on purpose.
