CONECTIVA LINUX SECURITY ANNOUNCEMENT
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------

PACKAGE : wu-ftpd
SUMMARY : Command execution remote vulnerability
DATE : 2003-09-22 16:22:00
ID : CLA-2003:748
RELEVANT
RELEASES : 7.0, 8, 9

- -------------------------------------------------------------------------

DESCRIPTION
"wu-ftpd" is one of the ftp servers available in Conectiva Linux and
 other linux distributions.

This update fixes a vulnerability[1] in the way wu-ftpd uses the
"conversion" feature, which is used mostly to (un)compress files. The
scenario where this vulnerability can be exploited varies depending
on the server configuration, but in the worst case, an attacker with
access (valid account or anonymous login) to the FTP server can
execute arbitrary commands by using specially crafted file names.

The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has
assigned the name CVE-1999-0997 to this issue[2].

Additionally, the anonftp package of Conectiva Linux 9 is being
updated to fix a problem[3] which is preventing the use of some
commands because of missing libraries in the chroot environment used
 to serve anonymous logins.

SOLUTION
All wu-ftpd users should upgrade their packages.

There is no need to restart the service after the upgrade because
wu-ftpd is started from inetd. The administrator might want to,
however, shut down all current connections which would still be using
the vulnerable copy to avoid a possible abuse by currently connected
 users.
