Debian Security Advisory DSA-1464-1 security@...ian.org

January 15, 2008 http://www.debian.org/security/faq
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Package : syslog-ng
Vulnerability : null pointer dereference
Problem type : local
Debian-specific: no
CVE Id(s) : CVE-2007-6437

Oriol Carreras discovered that syslog-ng, a next generation logging
daemon can be tricked into dereferencing a NULL pointer through
malformed timestamps, which can lead to denial of service and the
disguise of an subsequent attack, which would otherwise be logged.

For the unstable distribution (sid), this problem has been fixed in
version 2.0.6-1.

For the stable distribution (etch), this problem has been fixed in
version 2.0.0-1etch1.

The old stable distribution (sarge) is not affected.

We recommend that you upgrade your syslog-ng package.

Upgrade instructions
- --------------------

wget url
will fetch the file for you
dpkg -i file.deb
        will install the referenced file.

If you are using the apt-get package manager, use the line for
sources.list as given below:

apt-get update
        will update the internal database
apt-get upgrade
        will install corrected packages

You may use an automated update by adding the resources from the
footer to the proper configuration.
