Message-ID: <10208011334.ZM113618@einstein.csd.sgi.com> From: agent99 at sgi.com (SGI Security Coordinator) Subject: iPlanet vulnerabilities on IRIX -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- _____________________________________________________________________________ SGI Security Advisory Title: iPlanet vulnerabilities Number: 20020803-01-P Date: August 1, 2002 Reference: CERT? Vulnerability Note #276767 Reference: CAN-2001-0327 _____________________________________________________________________________ - ----------------------- - --- Issue Specifics --- - ----------------------- Multiple vulnerabilities exist in the iPlanet Web Servers as supplied by SGI. 1) CERT has reported that a buffer overflow exists that may allow remote attackers to gain read access to sensitive information contained in the memory of the web server process. The information disclosed may include userids, passwords, cookies or authentication data belonging to other users of the web server. With this data the attacker may be able to falsely authenticate themselves to the web server as other users. In some cases, the attacker may be able to prevent the normal operation of the web server using this vulnerability. More information is available at the following URLs: http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/276767 http://www.atstake.com/research/advisories/2001/a041601-1.txt 2) The SNMP agent (magt) daemon supplied with the Admin Server component of Netscape Directory Server 4.1x, iPlanet Directory Server 5.0, iPlanet Directory Server 5.1, and iPlanet Web Proxy Server 3.6 on UNIX platforms is vulnerable to a malformed request. The malformed request will cause the "magt" daemon to abruptly exit, so that it will no longer accept requests. More information is available at the following URLs: http://knowledgebase.iplanet.com/ikb/kb/articles/7805.html http://wwws.sun.com/software/download/patches/5174.html 3) There are also three additional vulnerabilities that exist in the iPlanet Web Servers that are NOT addressed by this advisory. See the "Impact" section. SGI has investigated the issues and recommends the following steps for neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems. - -------------- - --- Impact --- - -------------- The iPlanet Webservers are an optional product and are not installed by default on IRIX systems. These vulnerabilities may be exploited by a remote user, and no local account is required. The exploitation of these vulnerabilities can lead to a root compromise. These vulnerabilities have been reported by CERT and have been publicly discussed in Usenet newsgroups and mailing lists. The iPlanet webserver buffer overflow was assigned the following CVE: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2001-0327 See the following URLs for additional details on three vulnerabilities that are not addressed by this patch or advisory, and iPlanet's suggested workarounds: 1) wp-force-auth can be used in a brute force password cracking attack http://knowledgebase.iplanet.com/ikb/kb/articles/7764.html 2) Unauthorized listing of directory contents via "?wp-" query http://knowledgebase.iplanet.com/ikb/kb/articles/4302.html 3) The search functionality, not enabled by default, is vulnerable: http://online.securityfocus.com/archive/1/281287/2002-07-07/2002-07-13/0 http://online.securityfocus.com/archive/1/281199/2002-07-07/2002-07-13/0 Steps to disable the Search function per iPlanet, is: http://docs.iplanet.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/41/ag/essearch.htm#1023742 - ---------------- - --- Solution --- - ---------------- No patch is provided for magt iPlanet binary. Here are the steps to disable the binary: $ su - # cd <server_root>/plugins/snmp/magt (where server_root is the directory where iPlanet was installed) # chmod -x magt # killall magt SGI has provided a patch that will fixes the iPlanet webserver buffer overflow vulnerability reported by CERT.
