If I take your definition of 'old-school hacking' surely EL8 and PHC are hackers, but the also appear to break into computers and harass those on IRC in a fundamentally novel way. They claim that they are hackers by being blackhat, and you claim that they are hackers by being creative. If they refrained from their creative outlet of blackhat activities they surely would no longer be hackers by either definition.
