Here's how to make it work:

1. Read the protocol specification, available here:
http://www.realvnc.org/docs/rfbproto.pdf

2. From a shell prompt:
$ man 2 read

3. write your own.

Armed with an understanding of the vnc client-server handshake sequence and a reasonable knowledge of socket programming, it should take you about 30 minutes to get code that works properly. (If you're genuinely stuck after reading the two documents referenced above, mail me off list and I can help more.)
