Reference: SGI BUGS 852504 852669
Fixed in : IRIX 6.5.11 and higher
______________________________________________________________________________

- -----------------------
- --- Issue Specifics ---
- ----------------------

This is a followup to SGI Security Bulletin 20000301-02-I.

The fam daemon is an RPC server that tracks changes to the filesystem.
It is available on IRIX and as open source from http://oss.sgi.com/

It has been reported that a vulnerability has been discovered in fam which
allows an attacker to learn the names of files and directories on IRIX
versions prior to 6.5.11.

SGI has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for
neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be
implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems.

These issues have been corrected in future releases of IRIX.

Please see the following websites for more details:
http://oss.sgi.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=151
http://www.debian.org/security/2002/dsa-154
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=148853
ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD/CERT/advisories/FreeBSD-SN-02:05.asc

BUGTRAQ incorrectly states that IRIX 6.5.15-6.5.17 are vulnerable:
http://online.securityfocus.com/bid/5487

This vulnerability was assigned the following CVE candidate:
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2002-0875

- --------------
- --- Impact ---
- --------------

The /usr/etc/fam binary is installed by default on IRIX 6.5 systems
as part of eoe.sw.base.

To determine the version of IRIX you are running, execute the following
command:

  # uname -R

That will return a result similar to the following:

  # 6.5 6.5.16f

The first number ("6.5") is the release name, the second ("6.5.16f" in this
case) is the extended release name. The extended release name is the
"version" we refer to throughout this document.

- ----------------------------
- --- Temporary Workaround ---
- ----------------------------

If you want to run fam, there is no effective workaround available for
these problems. SGI recommends upgrading to IRIX 6.5.11 or later.

- ----------------
- --- Solution ---
- ----------------

SGI has not provided patches for these vulnerabilities. Our recommendation
is to upgrade to IRIX 6.5.11 or later.
