-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

                          SGI Security Advisory

Title : Netscape Browsers Vulnerabilities.
Number : 20030102-01-I
Date : January 7, 2003
Reference: CERT CA-2000-8
Reference: CERT CA-2000-5
Reference: CERT CA-2000-15
Reference: BUGTRAQ ID# 1726
Reference: SGI BUG 818218 820013
Fixed in : IRIX 6.5.13 and higher
Fixed in : Netscape 4.79 and higher
______________________________________________________________________________

- -----------------------
- --- Issue Specifics ---
- -----------------------

It's been reported that Netscape Navigator and Communicator versions prior
to 4.77 have numerous security vulnerabilities that can be exploited by a
remote user.

These Netscape products are not produced by SGI, but we supply them with the
IRIX operating system. Please see the following URLs for additional details.

   http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/1726
   http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/175060
   http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2000-08.html
   http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2000-05.html
   http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2000-15.html
   http://wp.netscape.com/security/notes/index.html

SGI has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for
neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be
implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems.

These issues have been corrected in the versions of Netscape supplied with
IRIX 6.5.13 and later versions.

- --------------
- --- Impact ---
- --------------

The netscape binary is installed by default on IRIX 6.5 systems as part of
netscape.sw.client from the IRIX Applications CD.

To determine the version of IRIX you are running, execute the following
command:

  # /bin/uname -R

That will return a result similar to the following:

  # 6.5 6.5.16f

The first number ("6.5") is the release name, the second ("6.5.16f" in this
case) is the extended release name. The extended release name is the
"version" we refer to throughout this document.

To see if netscape is installed, execute the following command:

$ versions netscape.sw.client
I = Installed, R = Removed

   Name Date Description

   I netscape 11/19/2002 Netscape Communicator Client, 4.8
   I netscape.sw 11/19/2002 Netscape Communicator Software Environment, 4.8
   I netscape.sw.client 11/19/2002 Netscape Communicator Client, 4.8

You can also use the 'netscape -v' command for more version information and
you should see:

Netscape 4.8/U.S., 29-Oct-02; (c) 1995-2000 Netscape Communications Corp.

The above listings show netscape version 4.8. If the version shown when you
run the command is 4.76 or earlier, then the system is vulnerable.

- ----------------------------
- --- Temporary Workaround ---
- ----------------------------

There is no effective workaround available for these problems. SGI
recommends either upgrading to IRIX 6.5.13, or Netscape 4.79 is available
for Free download from http://www.sgi.com/products/evaluation and the
Netscape 4.8 release will be available by February.

- ----------------
- --- Solution ---
- ----------------

SGI has not provided patches for these vulnerabilities. Our recommendation
is to upgrade to IRIX 6.5.13 or later.
