Subject: svchost.exe crashes

Today I have had 3 computers--one Win XP and two Win2000--reported where
svchost.exe crashes with the
following error message:
-----begin-quote-----
Error: svchost.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x1000526f" referenced memory at "0x00000000".
The memory could not be "read". Click on Ok to terminate the program.
Click on CANCEL to debug the program.
-----end-quote-----
This error is accompanied by the fact that some programs crash if one
tries to open a file more than once.
I haven't seen this error before. One of the computers seemed to be
infected with the Welchia worm, the other two were up-to-date with their
virus definitions and did not seem to be infected.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour before? Any clues as to what could
cause this?
