"Anti-virus firm to pay recovery costs

04/29/2005
The Asahi Shimbun

Anti-virus software maker Trend Micro Inc. will pay costs to repair
the widespread computer problems caused by a faulty Virus Buster
update it released last week, officials said.

The company said Wednesday it will pay up to 8,500 yen per computer
for costs incurred by individual users to fix problems caused after
they downloaded the defective update Saturday morning.

Trend Micro said it will extend by a month the one-year subscription
period for its anti-virus software for all users in Japan, regardless
of whether their computers were affected.

The blanket extension will be automatic for all Trend Micro's 3.5
million individual and 6.5 million corporate subscribers.

Affected individuals can either have repair costs reimbursed or add
three months to their subscriptions, for a total of four months free
of charge.

For corporate users, repair cost reimbursement will be negotiated
separately, Trend Micro said."
