Google will make money off it the way they usually do - by providing a useful service, based on open source and open standards, and use it as a conduit to deliver advertising :)

I hadn't thought of the Skype connection - but it *does* make sense when you think about it. Plus, it's another poke in the eye to Microsoft - "hey, Microsoft! We have just launched our IM service and already have more users than you! Neener neener!" (or something along those lines).
