The "media" have been mass calling it hacker and hacking... in all
comment systems i've monitored on the internet somebody has complained
about it being called hacker and hacking when its really phreaker and
phreaking.
I'm glad that it hasn't been killed off in total by the media, and I
hope journalists across the globe will think about the words they use
before canceling out a whole underground subculture which existed long
before the internet was around in mass.
I think a lot of journalists just read The Associated Press report,
and assumed AP knew what they were talking about and just copied over
"hacker" into different feeder news outlets that eat off news wires
such as AP.
It wasn't just a buzzword misquote, it was a whole history and
subculture the media have been blocking out internet-wide.
Kudos to Elinor Mills for fixing the correction... Cnet News listens
to feedback and makes editorial changes on the spot based on what
their readers tell them.
This is a big win for the scene and a big win for the community, and
Kudos to n3td3v for keeping the media in check about certain stuffs.
All the best,
n3td3v
