Subject: Circuit Switched Data in the US?

Hi all,

i am evaluating how the CSD (Circuit Switched Data) service is available
in the USA to make mobilephone<-->mobilephone data calls.

This because encrypted mobile phone calls in order to be done without
intermediate registration servers, required CSD calls (point-to-point
data path).

I am not considering VoIP, i am talking about CSD calls with
point-to-point direct data path between phones.

Well, AT&T tell that since end of 2005 CSD is available only for
"Qualified Government Users" for crypto calls:
http://www.wireless.att.com/businesscenter/solutions/connectivity/circuitswitch.jsp
A very stupid way of blocking a service used for encrypted phone calls...

I verified that foreign operator's SIM card roaming in the USA can
receive and make CSD calls. :)

However i am interested in users that in the US can get a local phone
number from a local operator and then use encrypted phone call system
over CSD (being it GSM or CDMA don't care, are compatibile networks for
CSD).

I heard that alltel and verizonwireless even if don't say anything and
their customer support is not able to tell you anything have working CSD
support.

Does anyone is interested in making some testing of international data
calls from europe to the US (i will make the call) to see if CSD service
it's active on some mobile operator, other than AT&T ?

Or if someone has already experience with USA operator and
mobile-to-mobile CSD calls it would be an interesting topic!

-naif
