I receive kernel panics while fscking my SATA HDD

[2.] Full description of the problem/report:
I'm in the process of upgrading to an AMD X2 (AM2) on an Abit KN9 Ultra 
mainboard (NVidia MCP55Ultra chipset). One of the partitions on my SATA 
hard drive appears to be damaged, so I run fsck on it. During the fsck 
the kernel panics.
The same thing happened with an Asus M2NPV-VM (MCP430) earlier.

fsck -y /dev/sda2. Probably won't work for you, though.

Note that the following data was taken from a freshly booted system with 
the partitions in question being mounted, but not accessed beyond that. 
Also, an USB stick was present.

The only runnable Linux in reach is the Gentoo 2006.0 Minimal Live CD, 
which apparently doesn't come with ver_linux.

I suspect that there might be a hardware problem, maybe with the
