Subject: [PATCH] Linux Kernel Markers 0.14 for 2.6.17
Hi,
Constructing on Jeremy Fitzhardinge's comments about gcc optimizations, I
rewrote (once more) the markers mechanism so that the optimized mode does not
jump between two different inline asm. Instead, the optimized version uses a
load immediate (in assembly) that will be used by a test to decide of a branch
(in C).
The generic, non optimized version, now does almost the same as the optimized
version, but instead of using an immediate value, it uses a value in memory
which must therefore be loaded before each test.
On x86, the result of the fast path is now (the call is put far from the "hot"
instructions at the end of the function) :
...
70: b0 00 mov $0x0,%al (load 0 in al)
72: 84 c0 test %al,%al
74: 75 57 jne cd <my_open+0x6f> (not taken)
....
Compared to the generic version (the call is also put at the end of the
function) :
...
64: 0f b6 05 07 00 00 00 movzbl 0x7,%eax (load eax from memory)
6b: 84 c0 test %al,%al
6d: 75 4a jne b9 <my_open+0x5b> (not taken)
...
I also added the powerpc optimization (not tested yet though).
Comments are welcome,
Mathieu
