Well, I have to give up for tonight... that make do not works (see the
problem explained in other messages, some part of the kernel fails to
compile for the redefined EXTRA_CFLAGS); I naively tried to do:

     make EXTRA_CFLAGS=-DPCMCIA_DEBUG=4 drivers/pcmcia/

(which worked)

and then

     make

(alone) but the second one recompiled the  drivers/pcmcia/ subdir, too.
Too tired to think right now (good excuse), so I will try to find a bit
of time tomorrow.

Another naive doubt I have is: in 2.6.17.13, with additional patches
