No, I hadn't but I can imagine how such an odd situation would occur for
distribution kernels even if it's a bit of a waste of hardware. I tested
this situation on a 4-node NUMA Opteron box. It didn't work very well based
on a few problems.
- alloc_remap() and SPARSEMEM on HIGHMEM4G explodes [1]
- Without SRAT, there is a build failure
- Enabling SRAT requires BOOT_IOREMAP and it explodes early in boot
I have one fix for items 1 and 2 with the patch below. It probably should
be split in two but lets see if we want to pursue alternative fixes to this
problem first. In particular, this patch stops SPARSEMEM using alloc_remap()
because not enough memory is set aside. An alternative solution may be to
reserve more for alloc_remap() when SPARSEMEM is in use.
With the patch applied, an x86-64 capable NUMA Opteron box will boot a 32
bit NUMA enabled kernel with DISCONTIGMEM or SPARSEMEM. Due to the lack of
SRAT parsing, there is only node 0 of course.
Based on this, I have no doubt there is going to be a series of broken boots
while stuff like this gets rattled out. For the moment, NUMA on x86
32-bit should remain CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL.
[1] It happens to work on HIGHMEM64G and I'm guessing it's because
alloc_remap() never succeeds although I did not verify that guess. I
suspect there are a few more HIGHMEM4G oddities to rattle out and I
didn't even try NOHIGHMEM.
=====
Subject: Fix boot-problems related to x86 32 bit with CONFIG_NUMA
The DISCONTIG memory model on x86 32 bit uses a remap allocator early
in boot. The objective is that portions of every node are mapped in to
the kernel virtual area (KVA) in place of ZONE_NORMAL so that node-local
allocations can be made for pgdat and mem_map structures.
With SPARSEMEM, the amount that is set aside is insufficient for all the
mem_maps to be allocated. During the boot process, it falls back to using
the bootmem allocator. This breaks assumptions that SPARSEMEM makes about
the layout of the mem_map in memory and results in a VM_BUG_ON triggering
due to pfn_to_page() returning garbage values.
This patch only enables the remap allocator for use with DISCONTIG.
Without SRAT support, a compile-error occurs because ACPI table parsing
functions are only available in x86-64. This patch also adds no-op stubs
and prints a warning message. What likely needs to be done is sharing
the table parsing functions between 32 and 64 bit if they are
compatible.
