This seems very generic compared to the quirk-based approach, so maybe it
can help more people than just myself. Thank you for considering my
argument.
OK, I am leaving for real this time -- unless you would like to use my
systems for more testing -- and have printed the 'dmesg/lscpi/timer_list'
output below, in case it is desired.
Before I leave, I just wanted to bring up an unrelated loose end:
During my experiments, trying to learn more about this regression, I
noticed that most of the code that adds resources to the iomem_resource
tree did so using these flags: IORESOURCE_MEM | IORESOURCE_BUSY
I found one place where a resource was initialized with only the
IORESOURCE_MEM flag. I am not claiming this is an error -- I do not
understand the kernel code enough to claim anything -- but it would
make me feel better if someone would look at the code and make sure
it is OK. (Sorry if this is a waste of time!)
In 'arch/x86/kernel/acpi/boot.c' (of tip/master) at lines 643-713,
there is a function acpi_parse_hpet(). The relevant code looks
like this, and the line marked with "*" is the one which I am
wondering about:

The "hpet_res" data is not added to the iomem_resource tree in this
function; it is added in the initcall function immediately following,
called hpet_insert_resource().
This had no bearing on my regression. I just happened to see it in
passing, and it made me wonder whether it is correct.
