Subject: Re: Various problems with new AMD 64 HP Pavilion Desktop machine. (REPOST)

****** [My mailer split up this message in a funky way. Sorry about
that. I think I fixed that problem.]

Hello.

I seem to be having a whole slew of problems with my new (refurbished)
computer and I'm bumfuzzled about how to solve them. A poster on
comp.os.linux.hardware suggested I post a message here.

Symptoms:

* My r8168 driver (latest available from realtek site) acts flaky.
The ethernet card works for a while, but then just craps out,
receiving and sending no packets at all. This usually happens during
a sizeable download. Removing and reloading the driver fixes the
problem for a short while.

* My Hauppauge 1800 (?) tv card seems to be acting up. Sometimes when
I lspci -vvv, I see

  !!! Unknown header type 7f

Other times, it reports the card properly. In any case, dmesg shows
"no eeprom present (err=-5)?" when loading tveeprom.

* I bought a PCI wireless card, but returned it. It was unable to
connect to my network regularly. Moreover, when it was plugged in,
and endless stream of error messages from the cx23885 tv card driver
was sent to the console. I have no idea why a wireless card would
interfere with a TV card like that.

* I bought a USB wireless card to replace it. Again, it is behaving
oddly, sometimes working for hours at a time, other times unable to
connect to my wireless access point at all and reporting that
"Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down"

I'm more than a wee bit clueless about all this. I hope that someone
can help me out here. Is it a hardware issue? Does it have something
to do with ACPI, as the colh poster suggested? Is my refurbished box
a lemon?

I would appreciate a CC with any replies, but I will also keep an eye
on the mailing list archives. Please let me know if I omitted any
relevant information.

Here's the output of lspci -vvv:
