Hi,

I've experienced the same behavior when switch from single to dual core in a 
setup mostly identical to yours.

However, I found that adding 'Option "RenderAccel" "false"' to xorg.conf's 
device section fixed the problem.

I was (and still am) using nvidia's proprietary driver.
