Subject: PROBLEM: looks like ftdi_sio module does not write port settings when
 usb device is un- and replugged.

Hi,

I think I might have found a bug in the ftdi_sio kernel module (or any
other related part). Please tell me if I've send this to the wrong
place.
I was unable to find the bug report form mentioned in REPORTING_BUGS
anywhere so I've answered the questions:

[1.] One line summary of the problem:
looks like ftdi_sio module does not write port settings when usb
device is un- and replugged.

[2.] Full description of the problem/report:
I've found two possible occurences, one with PySerial, one with
terminal programs connection through a /dev/ttyUSBx device.

To reproduce:
 - Connect a device with known baudrate (probably other than the
default, I took 115200) to the FT232 chip.
 - Open a connection and confirm that the connection is working.
 - Unplug the USB cable to the device
 - Wait a sec to assure that the device gets enumerated to the same
/dev/ttyUSBx (Say ttyUSB0) device.
 - Re-plug the cable back in and confirm that it is again coupled to
the /dev/ttyUSB0 device.
 - Re-open your program and connect to the device using same settings.
(PySerial did it for me, 'cu' does too.)
 - Observe that the connection is not working (possibly due to wrong
baudrate/flowcontrol/stopbit/etc setting).
 - Use another baudrate (or other setting, flow control worked for me)
to connect to the device.
 - Observe possible 'garbage' output (due to wrong baudrate), but
confirming that data is again received.
 - Again re-open the connection to the device using the original
(right) baudrate (or other setting)
 - Connection works again.

I suspect that the 'settings' are cached somewhere and while the FT232
is reset during disconnect and forgets its settings, the driver
remembers the settings last used and decides that writing the same
settings to the FT232 device is not needed. Writing different values
and then after that the right ones triggers an actual writing of
settings and makes the device connection work properly again.
Note that a more advances (or just another) terminal program might
manage to write the settings anyway (possibly due to always writing
initial settings and then the user selected settings). In which case
the problem will not show.

I've observed this while:
 - using PySerial to connect to steppermotor controller boards using
FT232's. I work around the problem by turning on and off flow control
to make the connection always work without problems.
 - using 'cu' terminal program to connect to a beaglebone console port
using an FT2232 chip. I work around the problem by opening the port
with the wrong baudrate and then again with the right one to re-enable
to connection to the console after an USB unplug.
