Subject: PROBLEM: Screen flickers with i915 KMS module on Sandy Bridge (rev
 09) HP Pro 3420


Honourable kernel developers! Please attend to the following problem
descibed below:

[I] One line summary of the problem:    

On boot of a HP Pro 3420, after the i915 KMS module is loaded, the
screen flickers like a zebra,
this continues until the Xorg is load successfully, but the flickering
remains.

[II] Full description of the problem/report:

On boot of a HP Pro 3420, after the i915 KMS module is loaded, the
screen flickers with white lines in 
front of the console, this continues after the Xorg is load successfully
in 
the native resolution 1600x900, and the flickering remains until
shutdown.

Booting with boot option i915.modeset=0 removes the flickering, though
the X server 
starts in VESA mode with a small resolution of 1024x768.

In kernel 2.6.38 the screen doesn't flicker but goes completely black.
I tried kernel 3.2.0.0 from squeeze backports which improved the picture
going from black screen to the zebra flickering.

I even compiled the newest kernel 3.4 from 20th May 2012, but still the
flickering is there.

The machine has a pretty new chipset which may be the reason of this
behaviour.
