I wonder what do others think. Christoph - any comments?

Also, what's the best way to merge this?

To avoid conflicts when vhost APIs change
(as that will be for 3.9) I can take this on the vhost tree
which is normally merged by Dave Miller.
Is this OK with everyone? Any acks?
