We're on the same page: I'm absolutely against breaking existing users too.

I think a hv console driver for um Linux will solve the problem, but I
can't be sure.  I'm trying to write one, and I'll hopefully have
something to show in a few more caffeinated hours.

Let me know if you have any thoughts/ pointers.
