Under what circumstances is p->em485 != NULL but
(p->port.rs485.flags & SER_RS485_ENABLED) is true?

ISTM, p->em485 is necessary and sufficient to determine if em485 is enabled.

In which case, this function can be eliminated and callers can be reduced to
