Why not just set ret = -EIO; here?

You only need to add a

	if (!ret)
>  	deb_info("Identify state cold = %d\n", *cold);

before this line.

So this becomes:

        else
                ret = -EIO;
        if (!ret)
                deb_info("Identify state cold = %d\n", *cold);
