Been there, done that.  :-/

Indeed.  READ_ONCE() and WRITE_ONCE() get this same effect, but without
pessimizing non-concurrent accesses to those same members.  Plus KCSAN
knows about READ_ONCE(), WRITE_ONCE(), and also volatile members.
