Interesting, I'd missed the duplication.
It was introduced as an endian fix.

Ah well, so in this case we are safe, but as Nuno states, it's not
guaranteed to always be the case. An obvious optimization would
be to not duplicate if we didn't need to do any reformatting of
the data.
