Please make that two patches, one for moving sync_io and one for
fixing the undefined behaviour.

So you are replacing a 'signed integer' (ie 32bit) calculation with a
'signed 64-bit integer' calculation.
IE you just shifted the overflow from INT_MAX to LONG_MAX, without
actually fixing it, or?
