My concern with this patch is that there might be some odd scenario
somewhere in which valuable debugging information is lost.  Unfortunately,
I haven't had time to fully explore the space of possible sequences of
double-free and use-after-free bugs.

It -might- be OK, but I cannot prove it.  Thoughts?
