Relying on DT is not a problem. Many drivers do that.

It's also ok to to read version information from a status register. If
you really have models that cannot be detect, that's more of a problem.

By maintainers, you mean maintainers in other parts of the Linux kernel?
Did they offer a solution on how to deal with this situation?
Do you have a link to sucha discussion?

I'd strongly prefer to rely on DT for this. Because this setting is
nothing that we want users to modify.

I understand, I just don't think that the parameter should be in the
official Linux kernel. It's an option for your internal development team.

It does not make sense to merge the DRM driver before the DT or ACPI
support is ready.

Why don't you detect the presence of the BMC card at runtime.

I don't understand. You can still have an internal patch that provides
this option to your development team.

The problem with module options is that they are hard to remove. Users
start relying on them and complain when you remove them. That happens
even if you provide a better solution. And some options, such as the
chip setting, can possibly damage the user's hardware. So it's best to
not provide options in the first place.

Right, but you can call drm_aperture_remove_conflicting_framebuffers()
directly.

Best practice is to detect your device's video-memory range and clear
use it as base and size values. In cases where you don't know,
drm_aperture_remove_framebuffers() remove all conflicting drivers.

Ok, sounds good. I expected some low-end devices, but 64 MiB should be fine.

I still want to remove those VRAM helpers in the long term. My
suggestion is that you simply reimplement the code in
drm_gem_vram_helper.c in your driver. It's not that much and you can
probably duplicate most of it. Please name everything according to your
driver's convention.

You should end up with a self-contained memory manager based on TTM,
which you can adapt to your hardware's needs.

As I outlined, please duplicate the VRAM helpers in you driver and adapt
it to your needs. I really just want to avoid more users of the VRAM
helpers. Building your driver upon TTM is perfectly fine.

Since you have devices with VRAM and devices without VRAM, you should be
able to handle both cases with TTM. TTM is flexible enough. You just
need to configure it in the right way.

For fbcon, using drm_fbdev_generic_setup() should be fine for now. If
you implement your own TTM-based memory manager, you will also have the
posibility of implementing a faster console. That's maybe something for
a later patch.

I don't think etnaviv developers would like such mergers. We usually
keep each driver separate from others and if we have multiple drivers
with similar code, we try to build a helper library that covers all of
them. Drivers can select from the helpers what they need.

I read through the examples, but still find it strange. No other driver
does this. Maybe keep the code for now, but I'd like to hear the opinion
of other DRM developers on this. I'd expect that there's a better
solution to this.

No problem. I think I mentioned that it wouldn't make sense to merge the
DRM driver before ACPI and/or DT are ready. So we have time to get the
driver into good shape.
