I did a checkout (v6.1.70) and a compile (with the .config from debian) to check for the 'bad' situation. Then I did a 'make clean', patched the tree and did a new compile. I think that should have activated the patch.

Maybe the extra .remove_slot function is not executed (or only applicable for a newer kernel version?), but I don't know how to add debugging info, sorry.
