Yeah, my bad, sorry for the noise.
I think I was thrown off by the comparisons mixing r1 and r2 as the
first operand. Something like this might have been easier for *me* to
parse, but not sure if it's worth changing anything:
return (a->x1 < b->x2 && a->x2 > b->x1 &&
a->y1 < b->y2 && a->y2 > b->y1);
