Replace:
        10000 -> 10 * USEC_PER_MSEC
        timeout_ms * 1000 -> USEC_PER_SEC (the variable can be dropped)

Please also check you have linux/units.h included for those defines.

Use the normal error handling logic by reversing the condition.
