I prefer tmp as it indicates this is really a value which is used to
store a temporary data. For me ret, rc and retval sound like something

As I replied earlier, I liked the comment you suggested, but dislike
having two checks instead of one in the usual operation. It's not like
this caused too deep nesting or anything.
