I think I will add a flag like

		/* Default when property is omitted. */
		if (ctlr->flags & SPI_CONTROLLER_DEFAULT_BUS_IS_CS)
			spi->buses = BIT(cs[0]);
		else
			spi->buses = BIT(0);

which should keep the defaults sane for everyone else.
