Below are my results.
In summary, the speeds in certain scenarios are closer than in others.
Pooling everything together, at the eyeball level, things look pretty similar
across using RGMII-ID and RGMII (no internal delay). If I were to run these
tests repeatedly, pool the results, and do a statistical comparison (probably
with a Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test or similar), I doubt I could reject the
null hypothesis of no significant difference between the two sample
distributions.
So what I said earlier regarding rgmii vs rgmii-id DOES NOT hold up under
more rigorous and careful testing.
