Indeed I haven't stumbled over any of the issues you fix in this series.
I briefly looked into it and it might be that at least some of the code
paths are only used with beam forming support. Could it be that my
cheapo USB sticks do not support that?

For what it's worth, I gave this series a quick test and didn't see any
regressions, so:
