hmm... I usually won't go with WARN if the case is impossible.

The code is quite tricky here, so I think it is ok to have a WARN_ON_ONCE.

May be increment the "retries" in this special case also and it can stop hitting 
this case again for the same bucket. WARN outside of the for loop. Like:
