Message-ID: <004b01c36213$20450240$550ffea9@rms> From: rms at computerbytesman.com (Richard M. Smith) Subject: Microsoft urging users to buy Harware Firew alls A Kia Sephia still comes with seatbelts and airbags even though it doesn't have a DVD player. Cable and DSL modems need to come with built-in firewalls for the same reason. However it's pretty clear that home cable modems are going to evolve into home gateways with built-in NAT routers and wireless access points. People who want that functionality can purchase it seperately. People who don't want that functionality don't need to pay $40 more for a feature they'll never use. Should all cable and DSL modems mix drinks as well? I for one enjoy a nice Grey Goose martini while reading ComputerBytesMan.com.
