Hmm... what OS and if Linux, version of coreutils are you using?

On my system, from "man mktemp":

       Create a temporary file or directory, safely, and print its
       name.  TEMPLATE must contain at least 3 consecutive 'X's in
              ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
       last component.
