Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. Every kernel up to 2.6.22.X works fine 
on the system. I was trying to verify a bug fix that is only available 
as patch against 2.6.23-rcX when I encountered the crash.

I compiled a vanilla 2.6.23-rc5 kernel. Same problem. Still no sensible 
debug information though...
