They are not:

+		"$SRCDIR/$i" > "$OUTDIR/$FILE.sed" || \
+		( rm -f "$OUTDIR/$FILE.sed" ; exit 1 )

This removes "$OUTDIR/$FILE.sed" if the sed command files. Just like the
trap command has been doing.
