The gain is that we move from a spec. centric geometry to an abstract geometry that contains all the necessary information for targets to use drive. This goes beyond 1.2 and 2.0, so as I see it it is a big gain. Think that upper layers (beyond pblk) can eventually use this geometry to access the device.

We have 1.2 and 2.0 at the subsystem level, not at the target level, so there is no base, they are just separate.

I’d rather keep them separated instead of deriving 1.2 from 2.0 so that we kan keep paths clean. Otherwise we end up doing castings that will make the cod very difficult to maintain as we add revisions to the 2.0 spec.

For the special case get/set and addressing, it can use the 1.2 variables in the nvm_geo if necessary. We can also put it in lightnvm core, but it is properly not worth to do.

The reason to do this is to have he geo_common structure in one place so that targets reuse the same geometry in case the device is partitioned. I think it simplifies the geometry as we do not do the “hack” of changing the number of channels and LUNs at a per instance level for each different partitions.

Pblk needs the 1.2 to form 1.2 addresses. We cannot assume that 1.2 page/plane/sector is continuous in the ppa format - it is this way for CNEX Westlake, but it is not necessarily this way for other 1.2 controllers out there. Believe me, I would really want to get rid of it...

> 4) maxoc / maxocpu, I did not add them in the early patches, as there is no implementation that will use it. When it is implemented, it can be added. At least it should go into a separate patch.

We use it. I’ll separate it. I am missing support in pblk, but that will come in future patches.

> 5) the rename of ppaf -> addrf / ppaf_bitsize ->addrf_len should be in a separate patch.
> 6) rename sec_offset/sec_len -> go into a separate patch or keep as is.
> 7) addition of nvme_nvm_id data structure, I can see where you are going with this, but it does not have anything to with what the patch describes. It should go into a separate patch. However, I rather just have the original implementation for identifying 1.2/2.0.

The only point here is to have it spec-agnostic. Let me separate the patch and then we see what’s best. This is more a cleaning up than functional patch.

> 8) If you want to remove the identify data structure in nvm_geo, make it in another patch.

Fair enough. I wanted to keep things together as they are all related. But I see the point.

I’ll separate the patches and then we can take one at a time.
