It's what I intended, but I may have messed up the formula.

if r1 is the top left rectangle, you've got:

r1->x2 > r2->x1   => true
r2->x2 > r1->x1   => true
r1->y2 > r2->y1   => true
r2->y2 > r1->y1   => true

So they count as overlap.
